It was THEY who answered Kitchener’s call To do the “honourable thing” And get blasted into glory “for your country and your King.” Leave behind your loved ones And all the birds that sing. Leave behind your loved ones These men – our Nation’s pride They took their sons (and daughters too) Just one small spark lit the flame of War Edna Sparkes I took one day out of my life to write this poem about the First World War; the thousands and thousands of men and women I’m writing about gave up their lives in the belief that “henceforth man would live in peace” since it was known as “the War to end all Wars.” HOW WE BETRAYED THEM!
