On this sunny morning 7 of us set off for Cottisford to walk round Tusmore Park. We left the cars at the church and made our way down a wide track at the side of College Farm. The birds were in good voice and were not put off by the sun suddenly disappearing behind clouds. After a short distance we turned off the track and walked along the side of a field of rape until we reached the open parkland of Tusmore House. Here an obelisk has been erected by the present owner to commemorate the Queen’s jubilee. It is the biggest obelisk built in Britain since the 18th century, took 2 years to build and is made from French limestone. After admiring the view, where a newly planted avenue of trees lead the eye from the obelisk to Tusmore House itself, we followed the track a little further before crossing a field to the house. It is thought that there has been a house on this site since the 1400s but the present house was erected in 2002-03. From here we passed through an avenue of lime trees to Tusmore Wood. Here the bluebells were in full bloom and provided a carpet of blue across the woodland floor. We then joined the College Farm track we had started on which led us back to where we started.
