The name Canons Ashby comes from Ashby meaning farmstead and Canons derived from the canons who founded the 12th century
Augustinian Priory.
The priory was one of the first Henry VIII suppressed in 1536 as it had gained a very dubious reputation due to ‘rowdy Oxford
students who had poor comportment’.
Henry subsequently gifted it to his childhood friend known as the ‘Vicar of Hell”.
